Post-Valentine Week: #6 Because Love Never Dies…

I planned to post seven real life love stories during the valentine week. However I got caught up with some work and I could post only five stories. So I decided to post the rest of the two stories under the title, Post-Valentine week stories. And obviously there is a need of few stories to end your hangover of Valentine week with…

It was midnight; I and Vipin were at the terrace. We were stoned and we were witnessing the beauty of the nature in silence. Stars were twinkling bright and it was a full moon day. Out of the blue, Vipin broke the silence,

“Light one cigarette bro!”

“Sure” I said and took out a cigarette, lit it up, took a long drag and passed it to him.

“You know bro; the best thing to do when you are stoned is to witness the beauty of the nature.” He said

“I know bro.” I said

“Why you are so silent than usual?” he asked me

“There is something which is going on in my head from a long time now. I always thought of asking you but couldn’t muster up the courage to face you.” I said

“What is it bro?” he asked me

I let out a sigh of relief, mustered up all my courage and asked him,

“What happened with her?”

There was a silence for a while, perhaps I have touched some personal topic which I shouldn’t have, I reflected.

The story starts with the start of our college; it was the first day of our college I was trying to get along with people around me when I got a call from some unknown number.

“Hello” he said

“Is this Vipin?” said someone from the other end

“Yes speaking, may I know who this is?” he asked her

“I am jenny’s sister. She is in hospital and her condition is somewhat critical. She is in ICU unit. Before getting unconscious she asked me to convey this message to you. Can you come here?” she said

“I am coming.” He said and hung up the call

He drove his bike as fast as he could; he skipped a few signals and finally arrived at the hospital. He parked his bike, asked the receptionist regarding the ICU unit, climbed up the stairs and he saw her parents sitting outside the ICU unit.

“What happened to her?” he asked them

Everyone was crying and no one said anything to him. Their silence was killing him from within. He didn’t know whether she was critical or not. He didn’t know whether she is going to make it or not. He peeked through the glass window and there she was lying unconsciously with several pipes attached to her body, it made him feel even more miserable. Tears started coming out from his eyes and he didn’t try to control them at all. He excused himself for a while, went downstairs stood in one corner and cried his heart out. He has never seen her in such conditions, he had never imagined in the wildest of his dreams and when today he saw her in that situation he couldn’t help but cried his heart out. After a while, he got a call again from her sister. He disconnected it and ran upstairs. When he entered the room he saw her smiling at him. Even in this condition she gave him that smile for which he was mad. Her gesture moved him completely. He held her hand and started crying.

“Hey what happened to you? I am fine Vipin, please stop crying now.” She said

He didn’t say a word; he kept on crying uncontrollably until the doctors came in and asked him to leave. As soon as he came outside he asked her sister,

“What happened to her?”

“She tried to commit suicide.” She said which blew his ears off, eyes almost popped out and mouth was wide open.

“But why she would do that?” he asked her

“I don’t know. Only she knows the reason behind it. I thought there was something wrong between you two and because of that she must have done that. But she told me that this has nothing to do with you while you were downstairs.” She said

He was perplexed. He had no clue why on earth she would do that. Several thoughts started circulating in his head until the doctors came out and said,

“She is fine now. However we will keep her for few more days. She has been traumatized with something which she wouldn’t tell. But her condition is serious and it requires attention. She is still very weak both mentally and physically. I would suggest you all not to bring any such topic which might disturb her. Just keep her motivating and she will recover from this quite soon. She needs your support that’s all.”

He had mixed feelings at that point of time. He was glad that she was out of danger but why did she try to take her own life was something which was still disturbing him to the core. Her parents were not telling him anything about this situation. And he can’t ask her anything about this as the doctors advised him. It was a case of chaos all over the place.

Every day after college he used to go to the hospital and meet her. He would always take a bunch of flowers for her, he would sit there for hours and hours and tell her the stories from his college, friends and when she would laugh over his jokes he would just gaze at her. It used to give him inner peace which he didn’t get anywhere else or from anyone else.

Days turned into weeks and weeks into a month, she was discharged finally from the hospital and she was back at home. But even in her room she had all the medical equipment’s like oxygen machine, heart-pulse rate machine. He never brought that topic ever again and all he did was spent most of his time with her and pray to god that she should come out of this very soon.

This continued till one and half years. She was still not completely recovered from her state.  She was still trapped in that trauma. However she showed from outside that she was happy but there was something which was killing her from inside.

That night, again he got a call from her sister, he panicked.

“Hello is everything fine with her?” he asked her

“We lost her Vipin. She is no more.” She said and stated crying

And he couldn’t listen more. He disconnected the call and became quite. He was sitting with his parents, he couldn’t react. After a while he excused himself for a while, he went on to the terrace, sat on one corner and silently wept for the rest of the night.

There was an eerie silence, yet again. I was completely moved with his story. I was almost close to tears. Perhaps even he was. We didn’t say a word for a while to suppress our emotions. And then he broke the silence, yet again

“You know bro, I never used to smoke, booze that time. But since then I couldn’t help. I couldn’t talk about it because I was not that close to anyone in college. I needed a support which I never got from anyone and so in search of that support I ended up doing everything. However I don’t have any regrets regarding all this. I only have a regret that I never got to know why she tried to take her own life. And that too twice.  First time it was her luck or maybe fate which saved her. But when it happened the second time, even her fate betrayed her and I lost her forever. But she is in here, deep down, in my heart.” He said

I just hugged him tightly and whispered into his ears, “I am sorry bro!”

I wonder why I come across such people all the time. Why is it me every time? When I look at him, I feel terrible. Why life is so unfair with us?

Perhaps god makes me meet these people so that I can write their story and share with the world.
